The question of subject within participatory culture:

Documentary Embroidery,Microcultures, Disputed Histories

Lecture & Presentation: MAY 17th / 8 p.m. BOEM*

Vahida Ramujkic shortly defines her work as setting the conditions for things to happen. There art-making comes as a collaborative form of research as well as a form of intervention. The results of this research/interventions always are surprising and unpredictable, because they arrive only as a result of collaborative visions, ideas, knowledges, skills. Whether the work is done through the process of creating a huge tapestries that would in slow pace document the life in particular neighborhoods together with its neighbors (Documentary Embroidery, with A. Kruglanski), experimenting with food fermentation and inventing new songs and lyrics together (Microcultures, with A. Kruglanski), or creating new histories by recycling the old ones found in textbooks (Disputed Histories), the core of the work will be placed in personal and collective experience. But the material outcome is also there, offering a living testimony of that transformative experience. In this experiential process interest is put in some small change that happens, a shift in the perspective in which things are usually perceived, new knowledge, new skills, etc….that emerge. The practice is based on a sustained presence in social and natural environments such as neighborhoods in mid-transformation, peripheral towns and countryside, where the participants are engaged in experimental and poetic craft. Projects tend to be slow in pace, developing through time and sometimes lasting for several years, trying in that way to create art that is consequential, and responsible socially and environmentally.
This kind of work building different relations between the artist, the public and the work itself, implies a series of questions such could be related to the authorship of the work produced, the new position of art institutions, new position of art in relation to society, etc..
